How to Put In and Remove Contact Lenses
The best way to learn safe contact lens handling practices is to work with a qualified optician. At InVision, we’re happy to provide as much time and training as you need. However, if you’re looking for some quick tips, here’s our advice.

New to contacts? The most common question we receive is how to insert and remove them.
Inserting your Contacts
- Wash your hands with soap and dry them thoroughly.
- Place the contact on your index finger—it should look like a tiny bowl with straight sides.
- Use your middle finger to gently pull down your lower lid.
- Look straight ahead and carefully place the lens on your eye.
- Blink and move your eyes a few times to help the lens settle.
Removing your Contacts
- Wash your hands with soap and dry them thoroughly.
- Gently pull your lower eyelid down with your middle finger, and lift the upper lid with the index finger on your other hand.
- Using your thumb and index finger, carefully pinch the lens and slide it off your eye.
It can be alarming to “lose” a contact lens behind your eye, but don’t panic! If a lens feels stuck or out of place, add a few drops of rewetting drops and gently massage your closed eyelid in a circular motion. Look in the opposite direction of where you feel the lens, then carefully slide it back into place.
If you’re stuck or frustrated, don’t give up! Always remember that practice makes perfect.
