Contact Lens Care & Cleaning

The best way to learn safe contact lens handling practices is to work with a qualified optician. At InVision, we’re happy to provide as much time and training as you need. However, if you’re looking for some quick tips, here’s our advice.

Contact lenses are ideal for active individuals and those who prefer a natural look without glasses. Whether you’re new to contacts or have been wearing them for years, proper care is essential to protect your vision and eye health.

How to Clean Your Contact Lenses

  1. Wash your hands with soap and dry thoroughly before handling lenses.
  2. Rub each lens with cleaning solution for 5-10 seconds.
  3. Rinse with fresh solution and place in a clean case.
  4. Fill the case with fresh solution every time—never reuse old solution.

Never, ever put contacts in your mouth, no matter what you’ve seen in movies! Mouth bacteria can cause a serious eye infection.

Contact Lens DOs

  1. Always use fresh lens cleaning solution.
  2. Clean your contact lens storage case daily and let it air dry.
  3. Replace your contact lens cases every three months. If you notice a crack in the case, replace it ASAP.
  4. Put your lenses in first, before applying makeup.
  5. Keep a backup pair of glasses nearby in case you need to remove your contacts.
  6. Remove your contacts if you experience any discomfort, redness, or change in vision.

Contact Lens DON’Ts

  1. Don’t leave contact lenses in for more than 14-16 hours at a time.*
  2. Don’t wear contact lenses to sleep.*
  3. Don’t let your contacts get wet—remove them before showering, swimming, or using a sauna.
  4. Don’t wear contact lenses for longer than recommended (daily, weekly, or monthly).
  5. Don’t share your contact lenses with another person.

*Some contact lenses are designed to be worn overnight or for several days in a row. Your InVision optometrist will let you know how often to change yours.
